Taking on the third round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge program, Tyler Maxson and his Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb Agajanian team took on the famed WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. With two pole positions already on their record in 2022, the California trip was one that the #77 entry would like to forget.
“It was a tough weekend for sure but all we can do is take the positives from it and move onto the next one,” explained Maxson, who co-drive with Mason Filippi. “We had some electrical issues that plagued us throughout the weekend, but the team worked hard to try and overcome them. In the end, we were able to finish seventh and salvage some points.”
Switching to the three-time championship winning Hyundai Veloster N TCR for this event, Maxson’s weekend was plagued with an electrical issue. Missing the entire first practice session, qualifying also had hindered performance due to the ongoing program. With a loss of power, the Maxson-Filippi combo were only able to muster up the tenth fastest lap time.
Beginning the wheel-to-wheel race from outside row five, Filippi would start the race handing the controls to Maxson just past mid-race distance. Able to run some of his fastest laps of the weekend, the teenager from Georgia was just able to hang on to the tail end of the lead pack but unable to advance too far forward. Ending his weekend with a P7 result, it is on to the next one for Tyler Maxson.
Maxson added, “Frustrating weekend but they can’t always go well. We will now shift our focus to the next one and look to finally find our way to the top of the podium.”
Maxson and Filippi will not have long to wait as in less than two weeks’ time they will be back at it at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
