The IMSA-sanctioned Ford Mustang Challenge traveled to New York for the second race weekend of the season at the famed Watkins Glen International. Tyler Maxson, driving for Robert Noaker Racing, showed impressive speed and race craft to win in both weekend’s races and his third race of the season. With the results, Maxson now moves into sole possession of the championship point lead.

Maxson was quick right away, setting the fourth-fastest time in the first practice session in the Dark Horse class on Thursday. He was fast again in a wet second practice, finishing as the second-quickest driver. Maxson continued to show speed in qualifying Friday morning, earning himself a starting position of second for the first race and pole position for the second race.

In race one, which was dominated by yellow flag running, Maxson took the lead at the start and ultimately crossed the finish line in first to celebrate on the podium.

“I’m happy to get a win today, but it would have been nice to get a bit more racing in,” Maxson said following race one. “Taking the lead at the start proved to be great, so I’m glad I took that opportunity when I saw it.”

Starting from pole position and preferred inside the front for race two, Maxson led from the green flag to the checkered, defending against challenges from his teammate Robert Noaker in a Robert Noaker Racing one-two-three finish. With Maxson at the point and Noaker in second, the podium was complete with teammate Reed Sweeny.

“Super excited to grab another win, and race two was great,” Maxson expressed. “The Robert Noaker Racing team was incredible the whole weekend, and that’s shown by the fact that Robert and I finished 1-2 in both races and currently sit first and second in the series points chase.”

Heading into the next event at Road America on August 1-4, Maxson will enter the event and look to expand his overall points lead.
